An anonymous post has appeared on Reddit from a person claiming to have worked at Meta for two years as part of the company's internal procurement team. According to the author, long before Meta's large-scale layoffs, the company had already automated a significant portion of its internal operations using AI agents, with employees being let go only after the new systems were already in place.
The author says they were responsible for managing supplier contracts, processing invoices, supporting procurement operations, and working with Oracle ERP systems. During the same period, Meta was rapidly expanding its data center infrastructure to support its AI ambitions, while Reality Labs was scaling production of its own hardware. As a result, workloads continued to increase, with many supplier contracts requiring revisions every 15–30 days.
Despite the growing workload, the author claims management decided to reduce the team to roughly one-fifth of its original size.
According to the post, by the time layoffs began in May, most procurement processes were already being handled by AI agents. One AI agent reportedly managed the entire procurement lifecycle—from negotiating with suppliers to preparing contracts. Other agents were responsible for reviewing, approving, and processing invoices, while human employees were left to handle only complex exceptions that the automation could not resolve.
The author also claims that outsourced teams were among the hardest hit by the changes, particularly groups of hundreds of employees responsible for reviewing invoices before payment.
The post also describes the atmosphere inside the company. According to the author, Meta had largely stopped converting contractors into full-time employees, leaving many workers in constant anticipation of further layoffs. The author further claims that not everyone inside the company shared management's public optimism about Llama 4, with some managers openly saying they no longer recognized the company they worked for.
In addition, the author references a video that surfaced online on April 30, allegedly showing Mark Zuckerberg discussing the use of internal employee data to train AI systems ahead of another round of layoffs. However, the authenticity of the recording has not been officially verified.
The author admits they spent several months watching AI gradually take over the responsibilities of their team but never believed automation would eventually replace them as well. Following the layoffs, Meta reportedly offered affected employees assistance in finding new jobs.
