How to Verify a Publisher's Traffic Before Buying a Post or Banner: A Checklist for Advertisers

A Google Analytics screenshot does not show whether the visitors are real: GA excludes only known bots, and since autumn 2025 many sites' reports have contained non-human traffic from China and Singapore. Ask the publisher for read-only access to Search Console and GA4, cross-check trends and countries, then tag your first placement with UTM parameters and verify it in your own analytics.

What Is Publisher Traffic Verification Before Buying a Placement

Publisher traffic verification is a set of steps taken before payment that show whether real people from your target audience visit the site, or whether the reports are full of bots and inflated visits.

There is no single job title for the people who do this. Link builders and SEO managers buy posts and links, while media buyers and performance marketers buy banners and integrations. Below we call them advertisers. Verification matters for guest posts, sponsored posts and banners alike: you are paying for the attention of people, not for a traffic figure.

Why Verifying Publisher Traffic Is Harder in 2026

According to the Google Analytics help center, GA automatically excludes traffic from known bots and spiders. They are identified through Google's research and the IAB list, and you cannot turn the exclusion off or see how much data was removed. Traffic that is not on those lists stays in your reports.

Since autumn 2025, site owners have been reporting a spike of sessions from China and Singapore. A Product Expert in the official Google Analytics community described this traffic as inauthentic and non-human. That means a screenshot of a site with such a distribution does not, on its own, prove inflated traffic: the owner may simply have run into noise. We explain what this noise looks like and how to tell it from real users in our article on GA4 bot traffic from China and Singapore.

Data filters the owner may have turned on do not work retroactively. According to Google's help center, the hostname filter, available since June 2026, applies only to new data. Anything that reached the reports earlier stays as it was.

Third-party estimates are not a way out either. Ahrefs' help center states directly that the figures it shows cannot be treated as the actual search traffic of a site. So there is no single reliable number, and you need to verify in several ways.

This article is not about whether to buy links. We will only note that under Google's spam policies, buying and selling links for ranking purposes counts as link spam, while paid links are acceptable if they carry the rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow" attribute. The risk is yours to assess. How to Verify Publisher Traffic: Methods and Comparison

Read-Only Access Instead of Screenshots

Ask the publisher to add you with read-only access. According to the Search Console help center, only a property owner can grant access: a Full user sees all data, while a Restricted user sees most data. In GA4, an administrator assigns roles, and you need the Viewer role. If the owner is unwilling to grant access, offer a screen-sharing session in which they open the reports you ask for.

Search Console: Search Clicks, Countries and Pages

According to the Search Console help center, the Performance report shows clicks and impressions in Google results, and the data can be grouped by country, page and query. According to the Google Analytics help center, Search Console keeps data for the last 16 months. Look at the trend over the whole period, the countries and the pages. What matters most is what happens in the section where your post will appear, not just across the site as a whole.

GA4: Engagement by Country and Source

According to the Google Analytics help center, GA4 counts a session as engaged if it lasted longer than 10 seconds, had a key event, or had two or more page views. That means you cannot draw conclusions from the share of engaged sessions alone. Also look at average engagement time and the share of new users by country and source. An example of such a report with numbers is covered in our article on GA4 bots.

Cross-Checking Search Console and GA4

Search Console counts only clicks from Google Search results. So visits that did not come from search do not appear in it. Compare organic sessions in GA4 with Search Console clicks for the same dates and the same countries. The numbers will not match exactly, since these are different measurement systems, but a multiple-fold gap is worth discussing with the owner. If GA4 is linked to Search Console, you can open the Google organic search traffic report, which combines metrics from both systems and shows data by country. By default, the Search Console collection of reports in GA4 is unpublished; you need to publish it from the Library.

Ahrefs Estimates

According to Ahrefs' help center, the tool estimates only organic and paid traffic; direct visits and referrals are not included. The company recommends using the data to compare sites and follow trends. The actual keywords and pages are more accurate than the overall figure. If the organic traffic claimed by the owner differs sharply from the estimate, ask for an explanation.

A Test Placement With UTM Tags

Tag the link to your placement with the utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign parameters, as described in the GA help center: the values will appear in the traffic acquisition report. The help center even gives utm_medium=banner as an example for banners. Buy a small volume and check in your own analytics how many people came and how they behaved. Your GA4, like any other, may contain noise, so cross-check the numbers against server logs and your tracker.

It is an estimate; direct and referral traffic is not counted

A Verification Plan Before You Pay

  1. Clarify what exactly you are buying: the section, the format and how long the post will stay live.
  2. Request read-only access to Search Console and GA4: the Full or Restricted user role and Viewer.
  3. Open 16 months of data in Search Console and look at the trend, the countries and the pages of the section where your placement will appear.
  4. In GA4, check engagement, average engagement time and the share of new users by country and source.
  5. Cross-check GA4 organic sessions with Search Console clicks for the same dates and countries.
  6. Compare the claimed figures with the Ahrefs estimate: look at the order of magnitude, the trend and the keywords.
  7. Ask whether the owner applies data filters and from what date. They do not change past data.
  8. Buy a test placement with UTM tags and assess the result in your analytics, logs or tracker. After the post goes live, check that the page is indexed; at scale this is easiest to do in bulk.
  9. If the placement is paid and contains a link, add rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow" to it, as Google's spam policies require.

Summary

A publisher's screenshot is the start of a conversation, not proof. Ask for read-only access to Search Console and GA4, cross-check them against each other and the Ahrefs estimate, and look at engagement by country and section. Tag your first placement with UTM parameters and assess it in your own analytics before ordering a large volume.
