With over 1,000 new domains added in 2026 alone, the August 25 update underscores the sheer volume of unlicensed sites attempting to capture Swiss consumers.
Enforcement Mechanisms and Oversight:
- Mandatory DNS Blocking: Swiss internet service providers must actively block access to blacklisted URLs. Attempting to visit these sites instantly redirects users to an official federal warning page.
- Dual Regulatory System: The ESBK exclusively monitors online and land-based casinos. Meanwhile, Gespa oversees sports betting and lotteries, maintaining a separate, dedicated blacklist for those verticals.
- Player Liability: Swiss citizens who access offshore websites do not face criminal prosecution. However, the ESBK emphasizes that these players forfeit all state protections against fraud, money laundering, and problem gambling issues.
A Highly Restricted Legal Ecosystem
Switzerland maintains a closed online gambling market where digital licenses are strictly tethered to existing physical casino concessions. The regulated space recently welcomed just its tenth operator, Casino Locarno, which launched the CasiNeo.ch platform following comprehensive ESBK approval.
