Google Allows Publishers to Track and Control Content Visibility in AI Search

Google has rolled out Search Console updates that enable website owners to monitor their presence in AI-generated search answers and control whether their content is used by AI algorithms.

  • New AI visibility reports: Search Console now provides impression metrics for Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, segmented by date, country, and device type.
  • No click-through data: The new report measures how often content appears in AI-generated answers, but currently excludes referral click metrics.
  • AI opt-out toggle: Publishers can now restrict Google from using their content in AI search responses. While this stops AI-driven impressions, it does not impact traditional web search rankings.
  • Shift toward Zero-Click search: Reuters Institute research reveals that only 4% of users click source links in AI answers, compared to 19% in standard organic search.
  • Traffic impact: Similarweb data shows that zero-click news searches rose to nearly 69%, while Scrunch reports that AI search accounts for roughly 1.1% of overall news site visits in 2026.
