Macau casinos generate $2.71B in August despite 1.2% GGR decline

Macau casinos generated MOP21.89 billion ($2.71 billion) in gross gaming revenue (GGR) in August 2026. Revenue was 1.2% lower year on year but increased 8.1% from July.

Despite the annual decline in August, Macau's cumulative casino GGR for the first eight months of 2026 reached MOP169.05 billion ($20.9 billion), up 3.7% from the same period in 2025.

Year-to-date growth remains positive

August marked another month of year-on-year decline, but the market remained in positive territory for the year as a whole.

The monthly increase from July indicates stronger activity, although August GGR remained below the level recorded in the same month last year.

Some analysts linked weaker summer activity to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, which ran from June 11 to July 19. Melco Resorts & Entertainment executives, however, said they saw no clear evidence of pent-up demand from customers who may have postponed Macau trips during the tournament.

Premium mass players increased their wagers

Data from Citi showed higher spending among premium mass players.

The bank's August survey tracked 31 high-stakes players. Their average wager was HKD244,000 per hand, up 54% from August 2025.

The survey therefore pointed to higher average spending even though the number of high-stakes players observed was slightly lower than a year earlier.

Macau's casino market remains in positive territory after the first eight months of 2026. The remaining months will determine whether further growth can offset the weaker year-on-year performance recorded in August.
