For a media buyer, Q4 breaks into three windows: testing in October, the peak from November 26 to 30, and the quiet "Q5" stretch between Christmas and New Year. Traffic prices don't rise everywhere or by the same amount, so decisions are better tied to the maximum CPM for each funnel. Below: the 2026 calendar, the formulas, and a six-week plan for e-commerce, games, and apps.
In short
- The early-testing window opened in early October. Black Friday falls on November 27, Cyber Monday on November 30.
- There's no single "+X% in Q4" figure: the increase depends on the platform, placement, and day.
- Maximum CPM equals 1,000 × CTR × CVR × payout. If the auction price is above that number, you cut the funnel. If it's comfortably below, you scale it.
- A week before the peak, account structure gets frozen, creatives get swapped out for Cyber Monday, and Q4 numbers don't become the baseline for January plans.
The Q4 2026 calendar: dates that move traffic prices
The key 2026 dates: November 11 brings 11.11 sales, November 26 is Thanksgiving in the US, November 27 is Black Friday, and November 30 is Cyber Monday. In between sit the US elections on November 3 and the "Q5" lull from Christmas to New Year. Each date changes who's bidding in the auction, and with it, the price of an impression.
The November 26–30 dates describe the US auction. If you're buying traffic for other geos, check this calendar against local sales and holidays.
How traffic prices move in Q4
Traffic prices in Q4 depend on the platform, placement, and day — there's no single growth percentage. According to Meta's fourth-quarter 2025 report, the average price per ad rose 6% while impressions grew 18%. In the second quarter of 2026, per the company's own figures, price was already up 12% with impressions up 14%. These are averages across all of Meta's apps and formats, not figures specific to the sales season.
Platforms behave differently. Per Tinuiti's report for Q4 2025, average CPM on Meta fell 7% year over year, rose 8% on Instagram, and fell 18% on YouTube. The most reliable approach is to watch your own account by placement and day.
Maximum CPM: calculate it before you launch
Maximum cost per 1,000 impressions equals 1,000 × CTR × CVR × payout per conversion. If the auction CPM is above that number, the funnel runs at a loss. Q4 pushes CPM up, but it often pushes CTR and CVR up too, so the decision should be made on CPA and ROI, not CPM alone.
Calculate the maximum CPM for every active funnel before the peak starts. That shows you where you have room for the price increase and where a funnel will go negative at the first auction spike.
A six-week plan ahead of Black Friday
The plan counts back from November 27. October is for testing, the first half of November for preparing your best funnels, the last week before the Friday for a freeze, and the peak itself for working the creatives. Ahead of the peak, buyers typically don't launch new channels, restructure campaigns, or change bidding strategy, attribution, or landing pages.
- October 16–30: testing. Launch new funnels and offers while there's still time before the peak. Platforms need time to learn, and you need time to build up data.
- November 6–20: preparing your best performers. Pick the funnels with the biggest cushion on maximum CPM, launch your last new concepts, and prepare Black Friday versions for your leaders.
- From November 20: freeze. Don't change campaign structure, bids, attribution, or landing pages. This is a reasonable rule of thumb — exact timing depends on the platform.
- November 26–30: the peak. Track maximum CPM by the hour. On Cyber Monday, swap creatives and copy so the day reads as a separate campaign.
- From December 1: review. Record the numbers by funnel and date — you'll need them next season.
Before the peak starts, also check the daily limits on your payment methods and accounts, and confirm caps and offer terms for the season with your network.
When to scale, and when to hold your budget
Scale a funnel while its maximum CPM still has room above the current price, and hold your budget once that room is gone. Buying early is usually cheaper, because competition for impressions rises as the peak approaches.
The rule for deciding looks like this:
- room above maximum CPM is over 20–30%: you can raise budget;
- room has shrunk to zero: hold your budget until CTR and CVR recover;
- CPM above maximum two days running: cut the funnel or relaunch the creative.
These percentage thresholds are a working rule of thumb — plug in your own.
What changes by vertical
Verticals react to the season differently: e-commerce lives for the Q4 peak, and games compete with retail for the same impressions. For nutra, crypto, and other narrow verticals there's no separate data — go by your own numbers from last Q4.
E-commerce and physical goods. For e-commerce, Q4 is the main season, and you're competing for that demand in the same auctions as retail. Check with your network ahead of time about promotions, caps, and start dates. You can pick an offer in the partner programs section.
Games and apps. Game and commercial advertisers buy the same mobile impressions, so during the November peak, games run into retail in the same auction. Moloco considers the window between Christmas and New Year a good time to ramp up buying.
The post-holiday "Q5" and January
The industry calls the window between Christmas and New Year "Q5." Moloco recommends ramping up buying during it to acquire users more cheaply. The picture changes in January, and Q4 isn't a valid baseline for planning.
Compare Q4 with last year's Q4, not with Q3, and recalculate your maximum CPM on January's own numbers.
Q5 is a good time to run tests that don't pay off during the peak, and to rebuild creatives for January. The holiday period running into mid-January depends on the geo — check the local calendar.

The takeaway
Q4 rewards whoever calculates maximum CPM before the peak. By October 23, write it down for every active funnel; by November 6, launch your last tests; a week before Black Friday, freeze your structure. After New Year, recalculate everything on January's numbers.
