Tesla to wind down Cybertruck production in Texas by mid-2027

Production of the Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas in Austin will begin winding down around mid-2027. Elon Musk said so on November 6 in a post on X: the freed-up capacity will go to increasing output of the Cybercab robotaxi.

Musk did not say whether the pickup would be built at another site or disappear from the lineup entirely. He said the Cybertruck has become a technology platform and that its work will carry on in the Cybercab. Replying to a user who called the decision the end of an era, he said the Cybertruck fleet will be on the road for a very long time.

Sales have long fallen short of expectations. According to an estimate by Cox Automotive, 20,237 Cybertrucks were sold in the US in 2025, 48.1% fewer than the 38,965 sold in 2024. In the first nine months of 2026, sales fell another 28%, to 11,586 vehicles, or 1.6% of the American EV market (Cox report for the third quarter of 2026).

The weakest quarter was the first quarter of 2026, with 3,519 vehicles sold, the lowest since the model hit the market.

Musk's targets were an order of magnitude higher. In the third quarter of 2023 he said the Texas plant could produce about 250,000 Cybertrucks a year, but probably not before 2025. Actual sales came to roughly a tenth of that level.

The Cybertruck is built only at the Texas plant, so the model's future after mid-2027 depends on where Tesla moves production, if it moves it at all. Instead of the pickup, the company is betting on the Cybercab, a two-seat autonomous robotaxi whose pilot production started in February 2026.

Tesla does not publish separate sales figures by model, so Cybertruck trends will be tracked through Cox Automotive estimates. The only timeline marker in Musk's statement and his post is the next one: mid-2027.
