South Korea busts Vietnam-based gambling ring linked to $46M in bets

South Korean police have uncovered an illegal online gambling operation that allegedly handled 63 billion won ($45.6 million) in bets over roughly 10 months. The operation was run from an office in Vietnam and targeted users in South Korea.

The platform began operating in April 2024 and offered sports betting, baccarat and slot games. Investigators identified 3,553 users who deposited a combined 63 billion won through the site.

Police referred 13 alleged operators and 105 high-stakes users to prosecutors. One user is reported to have wagered as much as 1.3 billion won.

The network recruited users through advertising

The operators promoted the platform through text messages and banner advertisements, directing users to deposit money into accounts linked to the gambling site.

According to investigators, the operators kept money lost by players. Police examined transactions involving more than 200 bank accounts believed to have been used in the operation to reconstruct its financial network.

Investigation began after a tip

Police launched the investigation after receiving information about the operation in September 2025.

Investigators then traced the platform’s financial transactions and identified its management structure. Most of the suspected operators were apprehended and referred to prosecutors without physical detention.

One suspected ringleader remains at large, however. Police are continuing to search for the individual and investigate the wider operation.

Police freeze suspected criminal proceeds

Authorities also obtained a court order to freeze 186.35 million won in suspected criminal proceeds ahead of indictment.

The amount represents only a small portion of the money processed by the platform, but investigators believe the frozen funds can be linked to the alleged illegal activity.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations have not been established in court.
