South Africa appoints new National Gambling Board

South Africa's Cabinet has approved a new National Gambling Board (NGB), with Dr. Makgathatso Charlotte Chana Pilane-Majake as chairperson and Kganki Matabane as deputy chairperson.

The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting on Sept. 23. The government published an official statement on Sept. 29.

The board also includes Chuma Fani, Zoleka Gloria Bula and Silochini Pillay. Representatives of the South African Police Service and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition have also been appointed.

The NGB regulates the industry at national level and works alongside provincial licensing authorities. Its responsibilities include protecting the integrity of the industry and supporting responsible gambling.

The new leadership takes office as online betting grows rapidly. The NGB has previously warned of risks linked to the growth of mobile betting, particularly for vulnerable players.

On Sept. 23, the NGB announced a partnership with the Advertising Regulatory Board. The two bodies plan to jointly monitor gambling advertising in traditional and digital media and strengthen consumer protection.

Earlier this year, the regulator sought proposals for technology that could monitor and potentially block illegal gambling sites operating in the country.

Recent financial results from major operators show online betting growing faster than several traditional segments. Operator SunBet reported a 35.5% increase in income in the first half of 2026.

The legal status of online gambling in South Africa remains mixed. Licensed bookmakers may accept bets online, while online casinos are prohibited under national law.
