The Finnish Football Association has launched an investigation into possible match manipulation following the HIFK vs Atlantis match after international betting-monitoring organisations reported suspicious activity.
The game was played on August 15 in Finland’s fourth-tier competition. HIFK took a commanding 3-0 lead within the opening 20 minutes, but Atlantis turned the match around to win 5-3.
Following the match, the Finnish Football Association received several alerts from organisations monitoring international betting markets. Integrity official Kaj Björkqvist confirmed that information from multiple official sources could indicate possible match manipulation.
Suspicion focused on Atlantis
According to the Finnish Football Association and Hufvudstadsbladet, the investigation is focused specifically on Atlantis. HIFK is not suspected in the case.
Particular attention has been drawn to three Atlantis players and their involvement in the incidents that led to HIFK's first three goals. The players are a goalkeeper and two defenders who joined the club during the summer.
Following the reports, Atlantis temporarily suspended the three Ukrainian players from match participation. Club general manager Markku Ritala said their contracts had not been terminated.
Unusual mistakes or an unexpected match result are not, by themselves, proof of match-fixing. However, the combination of the incidents on the pitch and alerts from betting-monitoring organisations prompted the formal investigation.
Another integrity challenge for Finnish football
The Atlantis case comes amid previous betting-related controversies in Finnish sport and concerns over competition integrity.
Last year, 80 players and staff members in Finnish floorball were suspended for violating betting rules. Following that scandal, Veikkaus stopped offering betting markets on elite men’s floorball.
The latest investigation is likely to renew scrutiny of lower-tier football, where a wide range of betting markets can create additional integrity risks.
The investigation remains ongoing. No match-fixing has been established at this stage.
