Reddit is testing ad placements in the search results of its platform starting November 3, 2026. The test is limited to a small group of selected advertisers, and ads are shown based on existing targeting and the contextual relevance of the query.
The company gave two examples. For the query “espresso station,” ads for coffee machines, coffee beans, and mugs may appear. For “home office setup,” the ads may be for monitors, desks, and office chairs.
Reddit did not name the ad format, the number of participating advertisers, or when the test will end. The company said it will track how users react to the ads. Based on the results, it will refine the experience for both people and advertisers.
The test comes as search traffic is falling. CEO Steve Huffman said that in October, the number of search referrals dropped by more than 1 million per week on average. The company links this to Google's AI search, which answers directly on the results page and sends users to third-party sites less often.
Reddit has tried other ways to monetize search. In February 2026, the platform began testing AI-powered product carousels in search results for a small group of users in the US. It also plans to gradually move users to a logged-in experience, starting with markets outside the US.
For media buyers and affiliate teams, this is a new placement with high user intent, which Reddit explicitly calls high purchase and search intent. For now, access is open only to selected advertisers, and Reddit has not promised to expand the group.
