Was Mellstroy’s Arrest and Extradition Just a Prank by His Friends?

Reports of the alleged arrest and possible extradition of Andrey Burim, better known as Mellstroy, began circulating online. However, the widely discussed incident appears to have been a prank staged by the streamer’s friends.

The prank looked particularly convincing given Burim’s ongoing legal issues with Kazakh authorities. It all started with a video in which a visibly frightened Mellstroy claimed that law enforcement officers had come for him.

How the Rumor of Mellstroy’s Arrest Started

Mellstroy’s friends decided to prank the streamer by staging a visit from law enforcement officers. A video soon appeared online showing a visibly frightened Mellstroy saying that officers had come for him.

The video quickly spread across Telegram channels before being picked up by media outlets. Some sources treated the situation as a real arrest and began reporting on the streamer’s possible deportation or extradition.

What started as a private prank quickly turned into a full-scale news story.

Kazakh Authorities Respond to the Reports

The story gained additional attention because Burim is in fact wanted internationally at the request of Kazakhstan.

Kazakh journalists brought the reports to the attention of law enforcement and began seeking confirmation of whether the streamer had actually been detained.

Kazakhstan’s Financial Monitoring Agency subsequently denied the reports. The agency stated that Mellstroy had not been detained.

It therefore became clear that the reports of Mellstroy’s extradition and detention that had spread online were not accurate.

Why Did People Believe the Prank?

The format of the prank played a major role. In the video, Mellstroy appeared genuinely alarmed and said that law enforcement officers had come for him. To viewers who were unaware that the situation was staged, it looked like a real emergency.

The existing media attention surrounding the streamer made the story even more believable. As a result, the report quickly spread beyond Mellstroy’s own audience and began circulating as a genuine news story.

The Prank Got Out of Control

What was intended as a prank for Mellstroy turned into a much larger wave of media coverage. Telegram channels, media outlets and even television channels began discussing the story, while Kazakh authorities were forced to publicly clarify the situation.

The incident shows how quickly staged content can turn into a news story when it appears against the backdrop of an already high-profile case.

In the end, there was no new arrest or extradition of Mellstroy. What many initially interpreted as a genuine development turned out to be a prank staged by his friends.
