Columbia Sportswear has launched the “Don't Panic Room” contest, with a 40-foot container converted for off-grid living and $35,000 in cash as the prize. From Oct. 28 until Nov. 24, adults in the contiguous US can post videos showing how they would survive. In other words, the contest opens on October 28.
From now until November 24, Columbia will accept video entries on Instagram or online at columbia.com/bunker. NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. Eligible are residents of the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia who are 18 or older (19 in Alabama and Nebraska).
Inside the container, according to the company, there is a bunk bed, a small kitchen with a dining area, a bathroom, and shelves with tools and footwear. The “Don't Panic Room” is designed to keep occupants equipped and warm in a worst-case weather scenario. The Rocky robot dog is for the winner's company, and cans of Columbia jackets open only in emergencies.
For the market, the mechanism matters here. The prize is a physical object, while participants make the survival-skills videos for Instagram themselves. Social media and user-generated content work to build brand reach, and media costs don't show up in this scheme. The campaign continues the “Engineered for Whatever” line the company has already used in promotions, after the brand's 10 Cannes Lion wins. Earlier, Columbia once offered its entire company to anyone who could prove the Earth was flat.
For buyers outside the US the contest doesn't matter: only US residents can enter. Entries are accepted until 11:59 p.m. ET on 11/24/26, after which the container goes to the winner, who will be delivered it and will maintain it.
