Reddit will begin full-scale tests of a model in which content is available only after logging in to an account, in the fourth quarter of 2026 in selected countries outside the US. The plan is described in its third-quarter 2026 shareholder letter, which the company published on October 29 together with its financial results.
The results of these tests will shape an optimized version of logged-in-only Reddit globally. The company has not named the test countries or a timeline for a global launch. Reddit has not published a full list of what will remain available to logged-out visitors.
The trigger was a drop in search traffic. According to the letter, it fell noticeably in the third quarter, and the decline accelerated toward the end of the quarter. In October, the site lost on average more than a million search referrals a week. The company expects this to hit daily audiences in the fourth quarter as well.
Reddit also cites other reasons for the shift: more signals for ad targeting, higher engagement among logged-in users, and protection of its valuable data. In his post, Huffman wrote that the “vast majority” of unauthorized access comes “through our logged-out experiences.” The company did not provide data to support these claims.
In the third quarter, US daily unique visitors fell 2% year over year, while international visitors grew 24%. The tests are currently limited to markets outside the US, so American traffic is not affected at this stage. Users in test countries who arrive from Google on discussion threads may be the first to face the login requirement.
Huffman described what will remain open to logged-out users only in general terms. He wrote that the logged-out homepage is useful and important, and that search visitors should land on the post they clicked. But the boundaries between logged-out and logged-in experiences are not yet defined, by his own account. “There are still many unanswered questions, especially about the boundaries between the logged-out and logged-in experiences.”
Next step: the tests launch in the fourth quarter, and their results will be published. The company did not say when the change will reach all users.
