Malaysia removed 724,879 online gambling items and blocked 2,603 websites

In a parliamentary reply, Teo Nie Ching summarized the results of the campaign against online gambling: from January 1, 2025 to October 31, 2026, 724,879 items were removed, or 98% of 738,372 removal requests, and 2,603 websites were blocked.

Internet service providers carry out the blocks at the request of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). In July, the agency reported 1,778 blocked websites and 457,562 removed items, but that data covered only the period up to May 31, 2026. From early June through October, the totals grew by roughly 267,000 items and 825 websites.

Separately, for January–July 2026, the reply shows that 573 gambling websites were blocked and 253,424 gambling-related items were taken down. The problem, however, is not limited to blocking: in September, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said 65,280 pieces of content were not removed after MCMC requests.

Roles are divided as follows: police handle cases under the 1953 gaming houses law, while MCMC is responsible for blocking and content removal under the 1998 communications law and the 2025 online safety law. The regulator itself does not seize cash or detain anyone; it assists police in joint operations.

The next step concerns money. The government is studying how to strengthen cooperation between MCMC, Bank Negara Malaysia, commercial banks and law enforcement agencies to trace and block transactions linked to illegal online gambling. So far this is a study, and no decision on the format has been announced.
