Indonesia to review platforms over AI-made gambling short dramas

Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) is reviewing platforms that distribute short dramas made with artificial intelligence, citing gambling, pornography and sexual violence. Deputy Minister Nezar Patria said so on October 23, after an event of the Film Censorship Board in Bogor, West Java.

According to Patria, the clips are actively promoted on social media and serve as a gateway: a user clicks a link and lands on another platform, where viewing requires payment. The content there, he said, is barely censored.

The review will also cover platforms without local registration if they reach audiences through social networks. The ministry sees the distribution method itself, not registration status, as the reason for action.

Komdigi already works with social networks through a shared dashboard for tracking potentially illegal content. Which platforms are connected and what the dashboard covers has not been specified. Patria said the Film Censorship Board, which has censorship experience, may be brought in. Monitoring OTT services, he said, requires closer coordination with technology companies to control not only social networks but also the apps users move to.

The statement contains no blocking orders, fines or deadlines.

Earlier, on October 21, Bank Indonesia warned payment providers that taking part in illegal transactions could cost them their licenses. It is worth watching whether Komdigi names specific platforms and whether requirements for social networks on advertising such clips follow.
